Getting Back in the Saddle in Your 50s? Read This First.
So, you’ve decided to return to riding after years focused on career, family,
or both.
First of all, welcome back. We missed you. And we’re looking forward to getting you back in the saddle.
HOWEVER, things may be a bit different.
Your’re not as young as you used to be
Your body will have opinions!

Your core strenth is probably your “weakest link”. Doing sit ups will help but nothing like stretching and strengthening in the saddle to help you with the abs. You can and will experience stiffness. This means you ARE using the correct muscles and progressing.
Boost your condifence
You might feel a little self-conscious in group lessons or walking into the barn surrounded by teenagers. It is easy to say, “Ignore that voice in your head”. You are there, in the stable, to ride, for you. And nothing else. Confidence isn’t something you bring, it’s something you rebuild, ride by ride. Remember: everyone started somewhere.
If you are concerned about riding with younger people enrol in a place that offers adult lessons.
Set and evaluate your goals
Some people are concerned about getting to the championships. You may, however, start off with getting back into a proper riding mindset. As you progress your goals and priorities may shift.
Begin with joy and connection. Commitment to riding 1 day a week. You are here because you enjoy riding and the atmosphere in and around the stable.
Know you have a community
More and more women are returning to riding in their 40s and 50s. You’re part of a powerful, inspiring group—and the journey is richer than ever before.
